Old-Time Memories. A Band of Pioneers. Reprinted from 'The South Australian Register', 1895

Adelaide, W.K. Thomas and Co., Printers, 1895 [first edition].

Octavo, 13 pages.

Pale blue wrappers with the title page details repeated (within a decorative border) on the front cover; expert conservation to a few trifling blemishes to the edges of the wrappers; small light stain to the foot of the rear cover; overall an excellent copy.

The front cover is inscribed in ink to 'Sir Samuel Davenport KCMG with the complts of the Author'; an early private library reference number is written above it. A great rarity, whichever way you look at it. This is the only copy we have seen in upwards of 45 years, and this one was written and presented by one outstanding pioneer to another, more than half a century after the events recorded took place. Simpson Newland arrived in South Australia in 1838, Samuel Davenport in 1843; in this very rare pamphlet Newland recounts incidents from his earliest years in the colony, mainly at Encounter Bay. The light pencilling in the margin alongside one paragraph is presumably in Davenport's hand. The scarce revised edition, 'A Band of Pioneers. Old-Time Memories', published in 1919, is common by comparison. Ferguson 13318.
