Lugdunum Batavorum [Leiden], Pieter van der Aa, 1693.
Folio, [xlviii], 528 pages with an engraved title-vignette and two in-text engraved illustrations plus instructions to the binder (cut out and mounted on a binder's blank) and 18 plates (3 folding). The plates comprise a frontispiece portrait of Gronovius by van Zylvelt, 6 plates of Roman coins, 7 medallion portraits of later Roman emperors, a portrait of Procopius in the same style, a view of all four sides of the 'Obeliscus Ramessaeus', and 2 particularly fine battle scenes by Romeyn de Hooghe, showing the battle of Strasbourg and the siege of Amida.
Modern 'Cambridge'-style panelled full calf with a gilt-decorated morocco title-label on the spine (giving the title as 'Life of Ammianus Marcellinus'); covers slightly bowed; paper occasionally a little browned; early ink ownership signature on the title page; later bookplate on the front pastedown; two plates (both portraits of Julian) bound in the wrong order; an excellent copy.
This edition by Jacobus Gronovius (Jacob Gronow) of 'Res Gestae', the history of Rome by Ammianus Marcellinus, was also issued by van der Aa in quarto format the same year.
