South Australia. Its History, Resources, and Productions

London, Sampson Low ... 1876.

Octavo, xvi, 432 pages plus 66 engraved plates and 2 folding maps in an endpocket ('South Australia', 795 × 545 mm, and 'Australia', 320 × 400 mm).

Original purple cloth sunned on the spine, flecked and slightly rubbed at the extremities; trifling surface loss to the front flyleaf (from excess glue around the edges of a bookplate mounted on the pastedown); endpocket slightly chipped along the open edge, with a tear near one edge neatly sealed; overall an excellent copy.

Provenance: Thomas Gill, with his signature on the title page and the first page. Thomas Gill (1849-1923) was a South Australian-born public servant, historian and bibliographer. His collection was bequeathed to the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia, which later disposed of duplicates in its library. This book is one of them: it has the RGSSA stamp on two pages (cancelled on the title page), and the John Goodchild-designed Gill bequest bookplate on the front pastedown.
