Item #59935 An autograph letter signed by the distinguished anthropologist ('Monty') to Rose and Harold [Sheard]. Charles Pearcy MOUNTFORD.

An autograph letter signed by the distinguished anthropologist ('Monty') to Rose and Harold [Sheard]

Small quarto, one page, undated (but 1964 from the content); folded once across the centre; in excellent condition.

This interesting letter is from Charles Pearcy Mountford (1890-1976, anthropologist) to his friend Harold Llewellyn Sheard (1890-1975, amateur anthropologist) and his wife Rose (née Lowcay, 1889-1968). Mountford has been busy in the eastern states: 'Ayers Rock [published in 1965] is in the hands of the publishers, the last volume of the Arnhem Land reports is almost complete [it was published in 1964], and I am going to get my M.A. Apparently the last examiner (undoubtedly Stanner) was much fairer in his criticisms than the previous one (Capell), who is a cobber of Elkin's'. The politics of anthropology ... (for more detail on the matters mentioned in this short letter, you need go no further than the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' entry on Mountford by Dr Philip Jones). Sheard assiduously collected Mountfordiana, which he later deposited in the State Library of South Australia.
