South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 134 of 1866. Transcripts of three letters written by Finniss at Escape Cliffs in late 1865: a short one dated 9 November, advising the members of the Northern Territory Expedition that he had been recalled, and that James Manton was replacing him as Government Resident; one dated 20 October, detailing his last surveying instructions to Manton (issued before he learnt of his recall; and one dated 14 November, in which he summarizes the current state of affairs at Escape Cliffs. Not least, he refers to six men, including Stow, who left the river camp 'in a boat which they had constructed, and reached the cliffs on Saturday ... What their intentions may be I do not know'. The voyage of the 'Forlorn Hope' had begun.
