Randolph Caldecott. A Personal Memoir of his Early Art Career
London, Sampson Low ... 1886.
Octavo, xvi, 216 pages with 172 illustrations plus a mounted oval Woodburytype portrait frontispiece of the artist (95 × 75 mm).
Black-pictorial olive-green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and front cover, all edges gilt; cloth a little rubbed at the extremities and lightly marked at the rear; light foxing to the first and last leaves; an excellent copy.
Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886) is still 'known to the world chiefly by his "Picture Books". The extracts from letters have a personal charm apart from any literary merit. The majority of the letters, and the sketches which accompanied them, were sent to the author's family' (preface); they are published here for the first time.
