A signed vintage photograph of Edgar Mayne, captain of both South Australia and Victoria, and a member of the 1912 and 1921 touring teams to England

A gelatin silver photograph (215 × 165 mm), with the inkstamp of the Sport & General Press Agency, London, on the verso.

Tiny sealed tear to the left-hand edge; paper residue on the verso (where removed from a mount at some stage, but there are later Mayne family pencil annotations on it); overall, in excellent condition.

The photograph is signed in ink in the top right-hand corner 'E.R. Mayne | Lords | April | 1921'. The 'Oxford Companion to Australian Cricket' states tha his 'upright style, pendulum-straight bat in defence and calm temperament marked him as a natural opening batsman'; this side view of him practising at Lord's reflects this description. He hit a career-best of 209 against Queensland in 1923-24, partnering Ponsford in an opening stand of 456, an Australian record that stood for 93 years. Aaron Finch and Ryan Carters amassed 503 in October 2015 against New Zealand at Blacktown.
