Commonwealth Parliamentary Paper Number 43 of 1913; only 950 copies printed. An annual return (to 30 June 1913) regarding indented seamen: numbers and nationalities, arrivals and departures, deaths and convictions ('nationality of the convicted person, the offence, how disposed of, and name of employee'). The latter run to two and a half pages - lots of drunkenness and disobedience and the occasional entering of a native's camp, but only one 'Hoisting national colours of Japan on British ship' (40s., or seven days' hard labour). The number of deaths, mainly work-related, for the period is shocking: 21 Japanese and 13 Malays.
