A vintage sepia-toned gelatin silver photograph (140 × 88 mm), printed as a postcard.
Slight discolouration; edges slightly thumbed; in excellent condition.
Captioned in pencil on the verso '"Jenny" | Native woman, | South Australia'. Holmes is viewed seated in front of a weatherboard structure with basket-making implements and three baskets in front of her, and a partially-completed basket in her hands. The image is vignetted in an oval shape. The South Australian Museum holds an example of this photograph captioned 'Jenny Holmes. Middleton 15.VII.11'. Vernon Ragless Padman was born at Middleton on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula in 1891. He appears to have been a keen amateur photographer, and took numerous photographs of the local Ngarrindjeri people, including at Point McLeay (now known as Raukkan) on the eastern shore of Lake Alexandrina (see South Australian Museum AA245/1).
