The Plague
London, Hamish Hamilton, 1948 (first edition in English)/ 1947.
Octavo, 285 pages.
Blue-grey cloth stamped in red and silver on the spine; spine unevenly sunned (through the dustwrapper) and slightly rubbed; stitching slightly strained at two openings (but both are firm); top edge slightly foxed; a very good copy (internally excellent) with the good unclipped dustwrapper (slightly worn and sunned, with some loss at the head and foot of the spine).
The first English edition, translated by Stuart Gilbert. Camus's classic absurdist novel 'La Peste' was published in 1947. The evocative dustwrapper design is by Michael Ayrton.
