Vertical centrefold, as issued; some scattered foxing (generally unobtrusive); a few small splits and tears expertly sealed; in very good condition, recently archivally mounted behind Mylar and a window mat.
A scarce large French nautical chart of Sydney Harbour, showing the city of Sydney in the late 1850s. The lower portion of the map contains an engraved elevation showing the approach to the harbour from the sea. The chart is number 1920 in the Dépôt de la Marine's published series, and this example is from the first issue. It was reprinted in 1869, with minimal corrections. The chart is based on British Admiralty chart 1069, published in 1859, one of the impressively detailed and accurate nautical charts produced from the surveys of Henry Mangles Denham during his Australian and Pacific voyage in HMS 'Herald' (1852-1861).
