The title page is signed by the author, the first person to win the Booker Prize twice (in 1983 and 1999). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2003.

'J.M. Coetzee [born 1940] developed a keen interest in photography during his final years of school, at St Joseph's Marist College in Rondebosch [Cape Town]. At 16 he acquired a camera, an Italian manufactured 35mm Wega, and set up a darkroom where he developed his negatives and produced his own prints' (Hermann Wittenberg, in an English-language booklet produced to accompany an exhibition of the photographs, taken by J.M. Coetzee in 1955-56. The negatives were not rediscovered until 2014, and many of them had never before been printed). The captions accompanying the images in this book are by the author, albeit translated into Italian.
