Original red cloth blocked in gilt and blind; all edges gilt; covers marked and slightly rubbed, the spine later overlaid with a strip of brown paper (now with the remains of a printed title-label on it); plates and adjacent leaves foxed; occasional light stains and marks internally; a good copy.
Published in the same year as the Great Exhibition, this work capitalises on the Victorian craze for water lilies. Indeed, Joseph Paxton was inspired by the ribbed underside of the leaf of the Royal Water-Lily (now Victoria amazonica) in his design of the Crystal Palace.
