Paper a little tanned; pin holes near the corners; several short splits and tears expertly sealed (with a few tiny marginal tears); a very good copy with light creases where originally folded in eight (as issued).
This attractive pictorial map shows Australia's mineral and agricultural contributions to the allied war effort during the Second World War. The cartouche at the bottom right reads: 'In War and Peace. Australia's industrial resources have been completely reorganised to meet war-time demands. Her factories are now turning out armaments of many types and aircraft, including fighters and bombers. Her shipbuilding programme includes destroyers, minesweepers and merchant vessels. In addition, Australia is contributing to a great wheat pool which will help to feed the starving peoples of Europe when the war is over'. This example has the ink stamp of the 'Australian News and Information Bureau | (An agency of the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia) | 610 Fifth Avenue, New York, N.Y.' on the verso. MacDonald Gill (1884-1947), British 'Mapmaker, Graphic Designer, Letterer & Architect ... was commissioned by the Ministry of Information to design maps showing natural resources and to create graphics for several propaganda and military training films' (MacDonald Gill website). He produced similar maps of other British dominions.
