Dark green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, and decorated in gilt on the front and rear panels; cloth a little marked and rubbed, with slight wear to the corners; minimal expert conservation to the head of the spine; front endpaper a little marked, with the hinge neatly reinforced; slight loss to the foot of the inner margin of the title leaf, with minor adhesion residue along the inner margin of the frontispiece; trifling signs of age and handling; a very good copy.
The title of previous editions was 'Hints on Farming and Estate Management'. The author explains in the preface that 'In treating of these subjects, it is, perhaps, difficult to draw a line of demarcation between that which is merely of importance to the Landlord, and that which may be exclusively addressed to the Tenant Farmer. Whilst I have hitherto treated the two subjects as a whole, I now handle them separately, so those who care for "Estate Management" only may purchase that volume, and those who are interested in "Farming" and "Estate Management" may buy both. I am happy to learn that the previous Editions of this work have met with very flattering marks of approbation from various Sovereigns, many of the Nobility, Landowners, Agents, Farmers, and others interested in rural matters'. Provenance: The Honorable Henry Ayers, C.M.G., with his armorial bookplate on the front pastedown. Sir Henry Ayers (1821-1897), legislator and businessman, was Premier of South Australia for a record seven times between 1863 and 1873. He was also 'Prominent in the small group which dominated the colony's financial and commercial affairs' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography').
