Catalina Chronicle. A History of RAAF Operations

Adelaide, The Author, 1978 (first edition).

Quarto, 127 pages with numerous illustrations plus endpaper maps.

Laminated pictorial papered boards lightly rubbed; spine lightly tanned and slightly chipped at the ends; mild signs of use (see below); a very good copy.

Number 95 of 1000 copies; this copy is signed in ink by the author on the title page. However, keep reading ...

Provenance: Captain Malcolm E. Brooks of 11 Squadron RAAF, sometime pilot of Catalina A24-49 with his signed commercial bookplate mounted on the verso of the front free endpaper. Inexpertly attached with clear tape beneath this is an original postcard-format vintage photograph depicting Major G.A.C. Cowper's Sopwith Dove on the ground at Clifton Hill station in March 1921. The ink inscription above it reads (in part, and as written here): 'E.A. Brook & Abbos at Clifton Hills 1921 | First to fly into Central Australia'.

On the title page facing it is another vintage photograph (105 × 172 mm, with a short closed tear to the top edge), inexpertly taped over the title, as well as Vincent's signature. The ink inscription reads (in part) 'M.E. Brooks, Captain, & Crew of A24-49', with seven of the nine identified.

The book is offered together with HONAN, (ex-flight Lieutenant) Robert Frederick: 'That's That. Memoirs of Wartime Service, 1939-1945' (Trinity Gardens, The Author, 1989; quarto, x, 118 pages plus numerous illustrations and maps; pictorial papered boards a little scuffed and bumped; a very good copy). The front free endpaper bears Brooks' large ink ownership signature; he trained and flew alongside Honan, and is mentioned six times in the index (see page 114 for details). A related newspaper cutting is loosely inserted. [2 items].
