The Passing of the Aborigines. A Lifetime spent among the Natives of Australia
London, John Murray, 1938 (first edition, advance proof copy).
Octavo, x, 248 pages.
Printed wrappers lightly discoloured around the edges and slightly marked, with the spine a little sunned; small annotation in ink, and a small tipped-in paper notice, on the front cover; an excellent copy.
The printed notice states: 'PRIVATE. As this is an ADVANCE COPY, please treat it as Confidential until such time as you receive published copies, and then destroy it. JOHN MURRAY'. Written in ink at the foot of it is '10/6 @ 5/3', presumably the retail and wholesale prices. Written in ink under the author's name on the front cover is '17 illustrations' (in what we recognize as the contemporary hand of Harry Muir of the Beck Book Company in Adelaide). This advance copy contains no illustrations: page [vii], headed 'List of Illustrations', is blank. The collation of the published work is xviii, 258, [2] (advertisements) pages plus 17 plates and a double-page map.
