Sydney, Art in Australia (and later, 'Sydney Morning Herald'), 1916 to 1942.
Quarto (all 92 issues in Series 1 and Series 3) and large quarto (all eight issues in Series 2 and Series 4), overlapping wrappers (flush-cut in Series 4) with numerous illustrations and plates (many in colour, often tipped-in in the early years).
Minor signs of age and use (mainly creasing and chips to the wrappers, with minor loss to some spines, and discoloured clear tape to the spine of the last number); occasional foxing; overall, in very good condition (with many issues in excellent condition) in the original wrappers, as issued. All 100 numbers are now housed in individual folders (bound in quarter calf and cloth with a small leather label on the spine), loosely inserted in a cloth strap across the inside bottom corner of the rear board.
The first number is inscribed on the verso of the plain card front cover 'To Arthur Streeton with the editor's best wishes. April 1917. Chas Lloyd Jones'. Streeton was living in England at the time. This issue contains a tipped-in colour plate of an oil painting by Streeton ('Miller's Point, Sydney Harbour'), with a one-page comment on the artist by Lloyd Jones. The second number carries the signature of a Streeton family member (S.B. Streeton). Included with the set is a uniformly-bound volume containing a photocopy of a typescript artist index to the full series, 'prepared in the Library of New South Wales. Preliminary Version for limited circulation. May 1973' (quarto, [140] leaves printed rectos only). [101 items].
