The Asmat of New Guinea. The Journal of Michael Clark Rockefeller

New York, Museum of Primitive Art, 1967.

Large quarto, 349 pages with 600 plates (90 in colour) plus a folding colour map.

Red-decorated black cloth lettered in white; rear cover lightly marked; half-title and last blank slightly tanned; an excellent copy with the clear acetate dustwrapper (with text printed in white on the front panel) a little scuffed (affecting a handful of letters) and slightly chipped.

'With his ethnographic notes and photographs made among the Asmat people during two expeditions in 1961. Documented by a pictorial and descriptive catalogue of the objects he collected. Edited with an introduction by Adrian A. Gerbrands' (subtitle). The objects in the annotated catalogue include 'some of the finest works of Oceanic art known'. Michael Rockefeller (1938-1961) lost his life on the second expedition (in November 1961); the photographs to that expedition disappeared with him. It was initially thought that he was lost at sea, but a recent publication makes a strong case that he swam to shore and was murdered and cannibalised by the Asmat (Carl Hoffman: 'Savage Harvest', 2014).
