A bookplate for Robert Francis Irvine
External dimensions 165 × 85 mm; bottom edge lightly chipped and creased (well clear of the printed image); a few faint spots of foxing; in excellent condition.
Peake 2720 (attributing the plate to 'I. Siplonc', evidently a misreading of the signature 'Sid Long' in the image). A singularly impressive bookplate, designed by the professional artist Sydney Long (1871-1955) for Robert Francis Irvine (1861-1941). He became the first professor of economics at the University of Sydney in 1912, before being forced to resign in 1922. Provenance: H.B. (Harry) Muir (1909-1992), bookseller, publisher and bookplate collector; by descent.
