Peake 581. Gerrard Gayfield Shaw (1885-1961) was a prominent Sydney gallerist and etcher. After an unsuccessful stint as a farmer, he 'quickly resumed his art career and concentrated his creative efforts on the production of book plates, which at the time were at the peak of their popularity in Australia. While many respected bookplate artists (such as Lionel Lindsay and Adrian Feint) were attracted to woodblock printing in the 1930s, Shaw specialised in fine detail etched images ... Shaw continued to produce bookplates throughout the 1930s, 40s and early 50s. One of his last bookplates was for Sir Winston Churchill (1955)' (Design & Art Australia Online).

Provenance: H.B. (Harry) Muir (1909-1992), bookseller, publisher and bookplate collector; by descent.
