A Naturalist in the Transvaal

London, R.H. Porter, 1892.

Octavo, xvi, 277 pages with 28 illustrations plus 7 plates (including 4 hand-coloured plates depicting new entomological species).

Pictorial cloth a little rubbed and lightly worn at the extremities; endpapers offset; stitching starting to loosen, but still an excellent copy.

William Lucas Distant (1845-1922) was a British entomologist; this is an account of his first visit to southern Africa, 'a twelve months' business sojourn ... [when] he employed the whole of his leisure time in ... zoological recreation'. His later four-year expedition resulted in the publication of 'Insecta Transvaaliensia' (1900-1911). His collection of 50,000 specimens was purchased by the Natural History Museum in 1920 (Wikipedia).
