Quarto, 2 pages (the first two pages of a bifolium).

The Duke writes to Colonel Braddyll in relation to military appointments. The cover is addressed to 'Colonel Braddyll, Hampton Court Green', from 'Clarence', and has a wax seal. The letter reads: 'St James's. July 13th 1810. Dear Sir, You may see by the seal where I write from: I am now waiting to see the Prince who is gone to the Duke of Northumberland: in answer to yours of 11th instant from Dover I must thank you for your attention and believe your account of Bayley to be correct: some years ago the command of the West Middlesex would have pleased me and now I do not decline it if offered by the Duke of Portland. I am better but still weak: time however will I trust make me a man again: I see Mrs. Braddyll airing every day but have not yet had the good fortune to speak to her. I ever remain, Dear Sir, Yours sincerely, William'.

In 1811, William 'parted from his mistress, the actor Mrs Dorothea Jordan (1762-1816) who had borne him 10 children. In 1818 he married Adelaide (1792-1849), daughter of the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen' ('Dictionary of World Biography'); the capital city of South Australia is named after her.
