Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art and Antiquities. Volume 1. Translated by Alexandra Trone

London, Butterworths, 1986 (revised edition, first English edition)/ 1974.

Quarto, [x], 262 pages with numerous illustrations plus 28 pages of plates (some in colour).

Laminated papered boards; laminate slightly bubbled, extremities slightly bumped; light tidemark to the bottom margin of the endpapers and plates, with associated light cockling of most of the leaves (and slight surface adhesion damage, including two tiny holes, to the bottom margin of five plate leaves); minimal signs of use and age; a very good copy.

This first volume of a planned three-volume work of reference 'is concerned with works of art and artefacts made entirely or mainly from organic materials'. The translator, Alexandra Trone, 'in collaboration with the author, has taken the opportunity of making various revisions and updates to the text, in some instances augmenting the information provided. The book can thus be seen as a new edition, in English ... it is mainly the chapters on solvents and paper that have been revised, and the bibliography has been comprehensively extended' (preface). In the Butterworths Series in Conservation and Museology.
