Cassell's Dictionary of Gardening. An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Practical Horticulture for all Classes

London, Cassell and Company, Limited, 1901.

Quarto, two volumes bound as one (from the original parts), vi, 480; and ii, 480 pages with hundreds of illustrations plus 19 (of 20) full-page colour plates by A. Fairfax Muckley (it appears that plate 15 was never bound in).

Original half morocco and cloth (lettered in gilt on the spine) slightly rubbed at the extremities and sunned on the spine; slight loss to silverfish to the front free endpaper and flyleaf (with the latter also creased); occasional light foxing; lightly-pencilled instructions to the binder in the top margin of each plate; minimal signs of age and use; a very good copy.

Provenance: Edward Charles Stirling, with his pictorial bookplate ('Gang forward') on the front pastedown, and his namestamp ('E.G. Stirling | Mt. Lofty, | South Australia') on the first title page. Sir Edward Charles Stirling (1848-1919), eminent SA surgeon, scientist and politician, created a famous garden at his mansion 'St Vigeans' at Stirling in the Adelaide Hills.
