Large quarto, xii, 273, [1] (colophon) pages with 142 pages of small circular illustrations from portrait photographs (2262 in all). The frontispiece portrait of King George V is now bound in between two pages of plates (30 and 31); a colour certificate from the Shire of Noosa (details below) has been bound in as the frontispiece.

Original half roan and later moire cloth to the sides (with the gilt-lettered portion of the original cloth mounted on the front cover); leather a little rubbed at the extremities; edges foxed; light to moderate foxing to the text throughout; the frontispiece and certificate have minor condition issues; minor signs of age and use; overall, a very good copy.

The certificate, presented on 8 September 1915 to C.F. Nielsen (3208 Sapper Charles Frederick Nielsen, 4th Field Company Engineers), was a 'token of esteem, and admiration' tendered to him 'for his self sacrifice, and Patriotism in joining the gallant band who left our shores for the battlefields of Europe'.

'This is a comprehensive record of 2468 men and some women involved in the Great War 1914-18, mainly those who actually served overseas. The biographical particulars were supplied by the relatives and personal friends of the men who proceeded on active service abroad. The photographs, including 2334 portraits [2262 by our count], in every case have also been furnished either directly or indirectly by the relatives and friends. Detailed information recorded includes: Record of military service; Where and when enlisted; Training and battalions; Where and when sailed; Details of service overseas; Medals awarded; Parents, wives, and often children; Birth place and school/s attended - often in other states or countries; Occupation before enlisting; ... many other service and personal details may be given' (FindMyPast website).
