The Fighting Ninth. Official Journal of the 9th Battalion AIF Association. No. 13, December 1960 [to] No. 19, November 1966

Brisbane, 9th Battalion AIF Association, 1960 to 1966.

Octavo, seven issues, ranging from 32 to 40 pages each number, with numerous illustrations (from photographs).

Wrappers slightly rubbed and marked; Numbers 13 to 15 with a light vertical crease throughout; an excellent group housed in a custom-made cloth clamshell box.

These issues contain much of interest in relation to the 9th Battalion's service in the First World War, including lengthy accounts of the Gallipoli campaign and several battles on the Western Front. One of the contributions is by Bill Harney. Perhaps more significantly, Numbers 13-17 contain the first five parts of a serialised history of the 2/9th Battalion by Major Wilhelm Emil Friedrich Lubke, a founding officer of the battalion. It covers the period from the beginning of the Second World War to Tobruk, but appears to have been discontinued without notice. This history is supplemented by interesting accounts of the battalion's other actions in the Middle East and the Pacific. The clamshell box was produced with this material in mind: the leather title-label on the spine reads 'Maj. W.E.F. Lubke et al. | History of the 2/9th Bn | 1960-68 [sic]').

Four related ephemeral items are loosely inserted, including a menu for the 33rd Annual Re-union of the Association in 1957, and a colour plate commemorating the conferral of the Freedom of the City of Brisbane on the 9th Battalion in 1960.
