The Chronicle of the 45th Battalion AIF
Sydney, Mortons Ltd. [for the 45th Battalion Association, 1927].
Octavo, 132 pages with a pictorial title page plus 5 plates and 4 maps; the colophon is printed on the recto of the rear flyleaf.
Dark blue pebble-grain cloth lettered in light blue on the spine and front cover; cloth sunned about the spine and slightly rubbed; institutional stamps erased from the front flyleaf and title leaf, resulting in minor surface loss (and there is a tiny area expertly filled in at the bottom corner of the title leaf); edges and early leaves a little foxed, with scattered light foxing elsewhere; small ownership label on the front pastedown; overall, a very good copy.
A presentation copy, inscribed in ink on the front flyleaf: 'With the compliments of the 45th Bn History Committee, Sydney Herring, Chairman, 26/8/29'. Brigadier General Sydney Charles Edgar Herring (1881-1951) was the battalion's Commanding Officer, and contributed the second of the two forewords. The book is undated, but the two-page foreword by General Birdwood is dated Chitral, June 1924. However, a review of the book appears in the 'Current Literature' section of the 'Sydney Morning Herald' on 30 April 1927, making that the more likely year of publication. Dornbusch 321A; Fielding and O'Neill, page 229; Trigellis-Smith 244.
