Sweeney Agonistes. Fragments of an Aristophanic Melodrama
London, Faber and Faber Limited, 1932 (first edition thus).
Octavo, 31 pages.
Papered boards; slight loss to the paper along the top edges of the covers; a decent copy with the dustwrapper sunned on the spine, with minor loss along the top edge.
'These fragments, originally published as "Fragment of a Prologue" and "Fragment of an Agon" in "The Criterion" are here for the first time reprinted in book form' (dustwrapper blurb). The front flyleaf is inscribed in blue pencil 'To Cecily, not for Xmas but for all-year-round love. K. Dec 15/42'. Cecily is Cecily Crozier (1911-2006); she edited and published the rare avant-garde literary journal 'Comment' in Melbourne between 1940 and 1947. K is the poet Karl Shapiro (1911-2000), an American serviceman based in Australia during the Second World War; he was Cecily Crozier's lover at the time. Offered together with a copy of 'Dramas from the Sky' by Max Harris (1942); although both the book and dustwrapper are damaged, the front flyleaf is inscribed 'To Karl Shapiro, Kindest regards. Max Harris. Nov 1942'. [2 items].
