[Japanese Surrender]

Two original photographs of the Surrender Ceremony of the Japanese 2nd Army at Morotai, Halmahera Islands, Netherlands East Indies, on 9 September 1945

Two vintage gelatin silver photographs (107 × 128 mm and 109 × 132 mm); minor corner creases; in excellent condition.

General Sir Thomas Blamey, Commander-in-Chief, Allied Land Force, South West Pacific Area, accepted the surrender of Lieutenant General Fusataro Teshima, Commander of the 2nd Japanese Army at Moratai, at '1 Corps Sports Ground. Lt Gen Teshima was accompanied by Captain Toyima, who signed for the Japanese Navy' (Australian War Memorial). Although Japan had formally surrendered in Tokyo Bay on 2 September, a number of surrender ceremonies were held throughout the Pacific afterwards. General Blamey signed the surrender document in front of some 10,000 allied troops; it would appear that one of them took these photographs in an individual capacity. The two principal Japanese are shown arriving at the ceremony, and standing at the table near the documents. [2 items].
