Thomas Charles Beirne (1860-1949), was a successful retailer in Queensland, with stores in Fortitude Valley, Ipswich and Mackay. 'Beirne retained an active interest in the [Brisbane] store until shortly before his death on 21 April 1949.... His estate was sworn for probate at £1,251,574 in Queensland and £19,225 in New South Wales, with other assets recorded in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Canada; he was one of the few millionaires in Australia. His estate was left to his family, apart from minor bequests to Catholic educational institutions and some charities' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography').
