James Prescott Joule (1818-1889), English physicist and mathematician, after whom the standard unit of work or energy is named. 'The Scientific Papers of James Prescott Joule' was published in 1884. This later volume contains papers written in collaboration with Reverend William Scoresby, Sir Lyon Playfair, and Sir William Thomson, respectively.
