Official Handbook. The Port of Sydney, NSW
Sydney, The Sydney Harbour Trust Commissioners, 1919.
Octavo, 68 pages with numerous illustrations from photographs (many full-page) plus 3 folding panoramas of the harbour (from photographs) and 5 large folding chromolithographic maps printed on fine paper (see below).
Brown cloth (lettered and stamped in gilt on the front cover) a little flecked; a few short tears to the maps expertly sealed; trifling signs of age and use; an excellent copy.
Four of the folding maps are superb bird's-eye views, from artwork by William Henry Withers. Details of these evocative illustrations are as follows; it is scarcely any wonder that copies of this work are rarely found intact. (1) 'Birds Eye View of the Port of Sydney', 1919; printed surface 747 × 608 mm; one 60 mm sealed tear. (2) 'Birds Eye View showing New Wharfage Scheme in course of Construction, Walsh Bay, Sydney', 1918; printed surface 803 × 520 mm; one 100 mm sealed tear. (3) 'Birds Eye View showing New Wharves & Approaches, Jones Bay, Pyrmont', 1919; printed surface 820 × 470 mm; one 40 mm sealed tear. (4) 'Birds Eye View of Proposed Terminal Grain Elevator and Cargo Berths, Glebe Island, Port Jackson, Sydney', 1915; printed surface 810 × 578 mm. The fifth colour map is 'Map of the Wharf Accommodation of the Port of Sydney', 1919; printed surface 740 × 400 mm; one 20 mm sealed tear.
