A Vision. An Explanation of Life founded upon the Writings of Giraldus and upon Certain Doctrines attributed to Kusta ben Luka

London, 'Privated Printed for Subscribers only by T. Werner Laurie, Ltd.', 1925 (first edition).

Octavo, xxiv, 256 pages with numerous diagrams plus a limitation leaf, a diagram of 'The Historical Cones' printed in red and black (facing page [178]), a frontispiece portrait of Giraldus, a small design of a unicorn (mounted at the foot of page 8), and a full-page plate, 'The Great Wheel' (facing page xv). These three plates, printed on brown paper, are by Edmund Dulac (they are not attributed to him in the book, but see Wade 149. The Morgan Library & Museum in New York has a copy of the book with a 'Flyleaf presentation by Yeats to Edmund Dulac, the illustrator', along with 'Yeats's and Dulac's sketches for the illustrations').

Quarter contrasting papered boards, with a paper title-label on the spine; all edges uncut (and substantially unopened); top edge a little foxed and dusty; minimal loss to silverfish to one of the vellum turn-ins; endpapers a little browned; binding cracked in one spot, but very firm; a near-fine copy with the very good dustwrapper slightly chipped and unevenly sunned, with the spine a little tidemarked.

Number 193 of only 600 copies signed by the author. A meditation on history, personality and the occult, with reference to Gerald of Wales and Qusta ibn Luqa.

Wade 149.
