Reminiscences of the Early Days. Personal Incidents on a Sheep and Cattle Run in South Australia ...

Perth, V.K. Jones & Co. Ltd., 1916.

Small octavo, 67 pages plus 3 plates and a double-page folding map of Hindmarsh Island; a small printed label ('Sarah Conigrave') is mounted at the foot of the preface.

Decorated overlapping wrappers a little marked and lightly bumped, with a very short sealed tear to the front top edge; internally in fine condition.

The balance of the title sets the scene: 'Where the Writer, Mrs. J. Fairfax Conigrave (a daughter of one of South Australia's well-remembered pioneers, Mr Charles Price, of Hindmarsh Island) spent her childhood'. The verso of the frontispiece is inscribed to 'Mrs Lewis | with my love | April 22nd 1929 | Sarah Conigrave'. This item is very rare indeed; this is only the third copy we have handled in over 45 years. Sarah Price was born in England in January 1841 and emigrated to South Australia in 1857; she settled on Hindmarsh Island, where her father had purchased land in 1853. A revised edition of this book (also scarce) appeared in 1938; she died in August 1940, just five months short of her 100th birthday.
