London, W. & A. Strahan for W. Strahan, J.F. & C. Rivington [and others], 1784 (fifth edition)/ 1755.

Folio (leaves approximately 420 × 255 mm), two volumes, unpaginated, but in excess of 1200 pages, with the title pages printed in red and black.

Early full calf, expertly rebacked, retaining the original backstrips; spines elaborately gilt-tooled in compartments, with contrasting morocco lettering-pieces; sides bordered with gilt rolls; covers slightly scuffed and marked, with the corners a little bumped and worn; the few leaves adjacent to the covers have marginal discolouration from the leather turn-ins; scattered foxing (generally light, but with several gatherings more heavily affected); short sealed tears to three leaves (7V1, 24B1 and 9H2, the last with minimal loss at the margin); occasional light offsetting or unobtrusive ink marks; minimal signs of use and age; overall in excellent condition.

A handsome set of the fifth edition of Johnson's monumental dictionary, the last to be printed in his lifetime. This edition is a reprint of the 1773 fourth edition, which incorporated Johnson's last substantial revisions to the dictionary.
