Mirka

South Melbourne, The Macmillan Company of Australia Pty Ltd, 1980.

Oblong folio, xii, 86 pages with numerous illustrations and plates (many in colour, many of Mirka's artworks); the majority reproduce photographs by Paul Cox.

Red papered boards lightly rubbed to white at the extremities and in a few tiny sections in the margins around the pastedowns; trifling surface blemish to the front free endpaper; an excellent copy with the lightly scuffed dustwrapper.

The acclaimed Melbourne folk artist, born in Paris in 1918 to Russian Jewish parents, died on 27 August 2018. This copy has neat ownership details (Margaret Cameron, Hampton, Victoria) on the front free endpaper. The half-title contains a lengthy inscription to her by Mirka, accompanied by a large archetypal (Mirketypal?) drawing in black ink of 'Margaret's cat' (115 × 235 mm). The inscription is pure Mirka as well: 'For Margaret who has a ViCTOR [heart symbol] | is lucky to have this lovely book. | We are having a doll workshop at CAe | today. 13. Octobre 1991. | With love. | Mirka'. A quantity of relevant newspaper and magazine cuttings and tearsheets is loosely inserted.
