Wayzgoose. The Australian Journal of Book Arts. Number One [all published]

Pyrmont, The Wayzgoose Press, 1985.

Small folio (300 × 190 mm), [v], 93, [4] (third one the colophon, others blank), [4] (advertisements) pages with a map, numerous illustrations and tipped-in monochrome and colour plates (3 folding), and 8 small marbled paper samples, plus 4 pages of black and white plates and 6 pages of colour plates (comprising one folding sheet, with two of the plates being double-page), and a loosely inserted two-colour errata leaf (essentially a broadside, 'Solecism', 285 × 169 mm, printed recto only).

Flush-cut plain blue card covers; tiny sealed tear near the head of the front joint; edges lightly foxed; an excellent copy with the dustwrapper (overlapping along the top edge) a little torn and creased at the head of the front hinge, and slightly marked and sunned.

Number 296 of 450 copies (the first 50 copies were bound in quarter leather and cloth). Thirteen articles of varying lengths on printing history, hand-printing, bookbinding and papermaking, including 'George Howe and Early Printing in New South Wales', 'The Art and Craft of Oil and Watercolour Marbling', 'Nature and Occurrence of Lithographic Limestone', and 'Pioneers of Process Engraving in Australia'. The editor's preface ('Cara Australis Derelicta') goes a long way to explaining why there was no Number Two of this worthy journal. Loosely inserted is the lavish prospectus for the journal (small folio, [12] pages, cord-bound, with 2 tipped-in plates and the folding sheet of colour plates). It is much rarer than the journal itself, being limited to only 100 numbered copies (this is number 60). [2 items].
