Angry Penguins Broadsheet. [The complete set of ten numbers]

Melbourne, [Reed & Harris] (and printed by The National Press Pty. Ltd.), January to September, and December 1946.

Quarto, ten numbers, all with pictorial front covers and a few other illustrations, the first nine numbers each 16 pages, the last number 28 pages.

Pictorial wrappers; minor blemishes to a few numbers (Number 1 has slight marginal silverfish damage to the front cover, and a small light stain to the rear leaf, with associated light tidemarks to the leading edge of the last few leaves; the wrappers of Number 2 are tanned, with a small inner top corner piece of the front cover missing; Number 5 has minor soiling to the front cover, with a little foxing elsewhere; Number 7 has silverfish loss to the leading margin of most leaves, with minimal loss of a few letters on the last leaf; the other six numbers are in excellent condition; overall, a very presentable run.

Nine issues of this supplement to 'Angry Penguins' appeared monthly between January and September 1946, with the bumper final issue in December 1946. The editors for the first number were Max Harris and James McGuire; they were joined by Sidney Nolan for the next eight numbers; and Max Harris and Harry Roskolenko edited the last one. This was also the last publication of Reed & Harris, as the printed announcement on page 13 explains: 'The publishing firm of Reed & Harris, publishers of "Angry Penguins" and "Angry Penguins Broadsheet," has been forced to close down.

This firm was founded for the express purpose of providing a channel of expression for the creative artist in Australia and of helping to give him that security and position in the community to which he is entitled; but after nearly 4 years of work and the publication of 14 books in addition to "Angry Penguins" and the "Broadsheet", it has now reached the end of its financial resources.... "Angry Penguins" and the "Broadsheet" will return to Max Harris, who brought "Angry Penguins" with him when the firm was founded'. As it turned out, the last number of 'Angry Penguins' had already been published, with the journal ceasing after Number 9 in July 1946. [10 items].
