With one colour folding map in a front pocket, and one in an endpocket; loosely inserted is the publisher's information sheet and two matching (unused) bookplates. Russians having 'forbidden Euopeans to travel in Central Asia, Burnaby immediately resolved to flout [the ban] ... On a cold damp day at the end of November 1875, Burnaby left for the Continent ... [After a perilous journey,] despite suffering frostbite, he survived the ordeal, and by a ruse worthy of some derring-do character in a John Buchan novel, managed to reach Khiva against the Russian's intentions ... a rare glimpse of the Russian Empire in the making ..'.
