Story of 'Southern Cross' Trans-Pacific Flight, 1928

[Sydney, Penlington and Somerville, 1928].

Octavo, 277, [1] (colophon) pages plus 68 pages of (mainly full-page) plates and pictorial endpapers.

Silver-pictorial light blue cloth a little bumped and lightly worn at the extremities, with a tiny tear to the head of the spine; minimal conservation to the joints and front inner hinge; foxing scattered throughout (a little heavier near the covers); overall a very good copy.

The pictorial front free endpaper is inscribed and signed 'To Fyfe Henderson with kind regards from C. Kingsford-Smith'; C.T.P. Ulm has written his signature below it. The pastedown carries an inscription from a member of the Fyfe-Henderson family, presenting the book to a regional historical society in 1976. The only Fyfe Henderson we have been able to locate is Wallace Fyfe Henderson (1871-1955), born in Sydney, and commemorated on the Mosman War Memorial. His WW1 service number was 35; he held the rank of staff sergeant in the Postal Corps, but his overseas service was cut short when he was diagnosed with Bright's Disease. We have not identified any direct connection between this Fyfe Henderson and Kingsford-Smith.
