The Kirk Moose and Other Stories

Glasgow, William Maclellan, [circa 1951].

Quarto, 72 pages with numerous two-colour illustrations by William Crosbie (even then, a well-known Scottish artist).

Green-pictorial bright yellow cloth lettered in green; endpapers offset; essentially a very fine copy with the unclipped colour-pictorial dustwrapper slightly marked and a little chipped, with a jagged tear and minor loss to the foot of the rear panel near the spine.

Lavinia Derwent was the pseudonym of Elizabeth Dodd (1909-1989), a Scottish broadcaster and author, mainly of works of fiction for children. 'Thousands of young people follow the comic strip adventures of Tammy Troot from day to day and know the other fascinating little Scots characters created by Lavinia Derwent for the BBC Children's Hour. With this book, which is the first to be published by Miss Derwent in Scots ...' (dustwrapper blurb). It appears to have been her last, and a sample sentence from 'Puffin' Billy' might help explain why: 'He aye likit this pairt o' his traivels best o' a', for to tell ye the truth he wasna' ower keen on the dirdum o' the toons'. Loosely inserted is a letter from the author (small octavo, 3 pages; Glasgow, 5 May 1986); signed 'Lavinia', it is a cheery note of support to an old friend. A later (and late) Christmas card, with a small sticker giving her address as a Glasgow nursing home, is also included; it is signed somewhat shakily 'Lavinia & T Troot'.
