Survey Department of South Australia. Field Service. Handbook for Government Surveyors

Adelaide, E. Spiller, Government Printer, 1880 [first edition].

Octavo, [ii], 56 pages (last blank) plus a large folding table (recto paginated '57', verso blank), a double-page star chart, and 11 numbered plates (including 4 folding maps or charts, and a folding table).

Full morocco, decorated and lettered in gilt on the front cover, and ruled in blind front and rear; leather a little rubbed at the extremities; boards slightly bowed; endpapers and index leaf a little marked and lightly foxed; a very good copy (internally excellent).

This work went through four editions under Harris (1880, 1887, 1897, and 1914). Provenance: F.S. Crawford, with his signature in pencil on the pastedown. Frazer Smith Crawford (circa 1829 - 30 October 1890) was photolithographer to the South Australian Government's Survey and Crown Lands Department from 1866 until his death. Most of the plates in this volume are credited to him. The flyleaf is signed 'H.M. Martin 13/11/90'; we presume this to be Henry Maydwell Martin (1846-1936) of Stonyfell Wines fame (and grandfather of the bookseller Mary Martin - they have the uncommon middle name in common).
