Paving the Way. A Romance of the Australian Bush

London, Gay and Bird, 1898 ('Popular Edition')/ 1893.

Octavo, viii, 376 pages plus 25 full-page illustrations (many of them by H.B.T. Cole; a few carry the initials KL).

Colour-pictorial cloth slightly rubbed and bumped at the extremities, with slight wear to the foot of the rear joint, and a few tiny indentations to the front top corner; front inner hinge cracked but very firm; early ownership and gift inscriptions on the half-title and recto of the frontispiece; a very good copy (internally excellent).

'Gay & Hancock' is stamped in gilt at the foot of the spine. Some elementary sleuthing online suggests that Gay and Bird became Gay and Hancock early in the new century, with G&B sheets appearing in G&H covers during the Edwardian decade, until stocks were exhausted. We are interested in learning more, so feel free to contact us if you know anything. By the way, it's not only an interesting cover: the book's worth reading too. Loosely inserted are some later newspaper cuttings relating to the shipwreck of the 'Maria' off South Australia's Coorong, the inspiration for the novel.
