Life of Charles Sturt. Sometime Capt. 39th Regt. and Australian Explorer
London, Smith, Elder, & Co. (but with 'Angus & Robertson, Ltd.' stamped in gilt at the foot of the spine), 1899.
Octavo, xviii, 395, [1] (blank), [4] (publisher's catalogue, unopened along the leading edge) pages plus 2 portraits of Sturt (aged 54 and 73) and 5 maps (4 folding, with tracks marked in red).
Cloth lettered and ruled in gilt on the spine, and ruled in blind on both sides; cloth flecked and lightly marked, with a small light stain affecting the name in the title; edges and endpapers foxed, with minimal light foxing elsewhere; light surface erasure to the front flyleaf where an ownership signature has been removed; a few leading edges slightly chipped where uncut portions opened inexpertly; a very good copy.
An early biography compiled by Sturt's daughter-in-law. The preface makes some interesting observations and acknowledgements, including the following: 'To no one are we more indebted than to Mr. James Bonwick ... in volunteering his skilled aid as an archivist ... and whose researches ... have been unexpectedly fruitful'.
