A collection of 111 different bookplates designed for John and Zelma Gartner
John Gartner (1914-1998) 'is remembered as a great bookman and Australia's foremost enthusiast of fine printing, private press books and bookplate material... He launched his own press, the Hawthorn Press, at 23' (Charles Stitz: 'Australian Book Collectors' [Volume 1], 2010). Almost all of the bookplates in this collection date from the time of the disastrous 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires that destroyed John and his wife Zelma's home and all its contents. All of these plates are in mint condition; the artwork ranges from exquisite signed and numbered prints (and some 32 of the bookplates are signed by the artist) to small nameplates, but overall, they form an impressive tribute to the Gartners' passion for, and patronage of, this book artform. A list of artists, dates and subjects is included. [111 items].
