A Prisoner of War repatriation notice and four photographs relating to 1690 Private Ernest Herbert Murray Leonard

Private Ernest Leonard, born at Port Elliott in South Australia, was a member of the 48th Battalion when he was listed as missing on 11 April 1917 at Riencourt, during the disastrous First Battle of Bullecourt. He was one of '1170 Australians [who] were taken prisoner - the largest number captured in a single engagement during the war' (Australian War Memorial). He was interned at Limburg an der Lahn, Germany until the end of the war. The AIF repatriation notice sent to his mother in Adelaide states that he arrived back in England on 14 December 1918. Offered with it is a postcard-format photograph of what we presume to be a group of prisoners at Limburg (one of them might by Leonard). There is also an enlargement of this photograph (145 × 210 mm, on a two-toned brown mount with a decorative border), along with two other uniformly-presented group portraits of prisoners. Two postcards written by Leonard to his father before his capture are also present; they are dated 6 July [1916] and August 1916. [7 items].
