Souvenir of The Greatest War. Regimental Colours. Australian Commonwealth Military Forces 1914-1919

[Adelaide, Frederick George Goss, 1919].

A colour poster printed on paper (470 × 663 mm), mounted on flush-cut cardboard (a little cropped along the top edge).

Small light tidemark in the plain bottom margin; a few trifling blemishes to the surface, and small chips and bumps to the edges; overall a very good copy.

The poster shows the colour patches of all units from the Light Horse, the 1st to 5th Divisions, and a number of other groups (from Signals to Dentistry via the Tunnellers), laid out in the Rising Sun motif with the English Crown as the centrepiece. This is flanked by two columns comprising eleven Allied military decorations (from the Victoria Cross to the French War Cross). Additionally, at each corner is a line illustration of an iconic war scene from Belgium, France, Egypt and Gallipoli. The artwork is credited to Sergeant F.G. Goss, AIF. 3371 Frederick George Goss was a South Australian architect; he enlisted on 1 October 1915 and was attached to the 8th Field Company Engineers. A short article in the Adelaide newspaper, 'The Mail' (17 May 1919), leads us to believe the poster was published in Adelaide by the artist around that time.
