A carte de visite of the famous Brazilian circus equestrians Martinho Lowande and his daughter Marrietta, taken in Melbourne in 1878
An albumen paper photograph (image size 89 × 53 mm, a little unevenly trimmed around the edges, but as issued), mounted on plain card (a little fingermarked and lightly worn at the extremities, with minor loss to a bottom corner); although showing signs of age and use, it gives the appearance of being loved rather than unloved.
This photograph of Martinho Lowande (1839-1927) and his daughter Marrietta (1871-1962) was one of a number taken in Melbourne in 1878 when the Lowandes toured Australia as members of Cooper, Bailey's Great International Circus, from the USA. [We are indebted to Mark St Leon, the Australian circus historian, for kindly volunteering this information].
