A series of 19 stereographs of the Naracoorte Caves in the south-east of South Australia

All right-hand images are captioned and numbered in the negative (1-22, with only numbers 4, 5 and 18 missing from the sequence); the series caption is printed on each mount. Eleven cards are ink-stamped on the verso 'J. Ellis. Petree | Naracoorte', but we are reasonably sure this is not the photographer. On the basis of a few similar items we sold many years ago (we suspect they are the ones in the State Library of South Australia, the only ones in Trove), we suggest William Augustus Francis (1842-1918), recorded by Noye as being active in Naracoorte from 1908 to 1915. Eight stereographs have minor silverfish damage, confined mainly to the edges (very light in all but two instances); occasional silvering-out; overall in very good condition. Provenance: Sir Douglas Mawson (1882-1958), geologist and explorer; by direct descent. [19 items].
